Boring the pilot hole through the centre
of an elm tree log by hand.
The bored out log will form the
barrel of one of the ship's two bilge pumps.
One man turns the hand auger while
two pull it into the hole so that the
shell bit bites.

The large mortice cut in the forward face
of the stem will take the tenon of the
beakhead knee. The beakhead extends
forward from the bow and includes
the ship's toilet still called
"the head" or "heads" on a ship.

Looking aft from midships the quarter deck beams
are all in place and ready for laying the deck planking.
