Greg
State/Country of residence when not at sea:
Fremantle, Australia.
Ships sailed on:
STS Leeuwin II and STV One & All.
How did you first get involved with the Duyfken project?
Watching her being built not five minutes from my home in Fremantle gave me the inspiration to want to sail on her. I've got Peter Manthorpe to thank for that!
Why are you embarking on the Duyfken Voyagie?
Learning the amazing history on the trip through Indonesia in 2000 has kindled a want to explore the history of the old VOC route worldwide. No better way to explore than on Duyfken.
How do you cope with life aboard a small ship such as Duyfken?
I have some great memories of having my hammock strung high up on the poop for weeks. Sometimes I like the primitive/adventure aspects of Duyfken more then being land based.
What is the most unusual item in your sea chest?
Two Fiddy the Penguin (veteran tall ship mascot), a nutmeg!! (not so unusual for me), SPACE!! (very unusual).
How will you cope with the primitive conditions aboard?
Love it! People out there don't realize just how good an simple life it. Try it some time!!
What do you find is the most difficult aspect of sailing aboard Duyfken?
Most definitely dealing and living with others. You sacrifice a lot when 16 people are all sleeping in one area together.
What do you think will be the highlight of the voyage?
Probably the arrival in Texel. But you can't beat a moonlit ship on a moonlit ocean, following breeze and a warm meal.
