MEDIA RELEASE 24 August 2000 SOAKED TO THE SKIN, SICK
AS A DOG, DEPRIVED OF SLEEP: DO YOU HAVE THE RIGHT STUFF?
You will be soaked to the skin, tossed about the Pacific
Ocean like a cork working more than 16 hours a day, eat
on deck with a bowl between your legs, shower with a bucket
and do things you never thought that you could do. You'll
also have the adventure of your life sailing the world's
most authentic 16th century sailing ship replica in the
way that sailors of 1606 would have done. The replica ship
Duyfken which arrived at Weipa on April 9 after a grueling
five month expedition is looking for people who think they
have the right stuff to join the Chevron 2000 Duyfken Expedition
as voyage crew as she sails from Port Moresby to Cooktown
and then south from port to port to Brisbane. Duyfken 1606
Replica Foundation project director Graeme Cocks said that
voyage crew are asked to pay for expenses on board as they
sail and in return will be asked to help sail the vessel
as crew members. "Many of the voyages in Queensland are
quite short, giving people a taste of life at sea without
the rigours of a longer passage like we have just undertaken
through Indonesia," he said. "However, people should be
under no misapprehension - sailing Duyfken is no river cruise.
Conditions on board Duyfken are as close to the 16th century
as we can make them without needing a press gang. "Voyage
crew will share the same conditions as the rest of the crew
- sleeping above or below decks in hammocks or on mats.
"Duyfken has a professional crew of 13, with a further six
"voyage crew" positions available for all legs of the expedition.
Voyage crew are non-professional sailors who can join as
part of the crew and pay a fee of $165 per day with a joining
fee of $105 for the privilege of being part of this historic
expedition. Their contribution will help to pay for the
considerable costs of conducting the voyage. "The voyage
crew are expected to perform all of the duties required
of regular crew members, but they can join for as little
as a couple of days - or for the rest of the expedition
if they wish." People interested in joining the Chevron
2000 Duyfken Expedition as voyage crew should contact the

Duyfken 1606 Replica Foundation has constructed a full seagoing
replica of the first recorded ship to visit Australia -
the Dutch trading ship Duyfken or "Little Dove" which sailed
from Banda in Indonesia to the Pennefather River near Weipa
in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland in 1606. |
